Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry
Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.
"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.
He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
